Steel Construction Manual 13th Edition, American Institute Of Steel Construction



I have been a longtime user of the AISC 9th edition, which is the "green steel bible", used it for 15 years. Please note the color of the book's cover, which I gave it such a name! However, since steel technology has changed so over the course of these years, I finally decided to purchase the 13th edition of the "black steel bible", please note the color of this book's cover, which I gave it such a name! What I like most about the 13th edition of the AISC "steel bible" is the flexibility in using both Allowable Stress Design (ASD) versus Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) as well as new terminology and illustrative descriptions of steel connections (bolted and welded connection types). They serve to improve the methods by which steel structures are supposed to be designed. Some of the other books like the one I ordered had a CD-ROM included, mine did not. For now, I'm not cringing on having purchased a "used" steel bible without a CD-ROM, I'll just by the CD-ROM itself later, right out of AISC; namely www.aisc.com The seller could have also said that it was "mint condition" though it has been used a handful of times, granted that there are no highlight marks, excessive pencil scribbling, or pages missing. Love the new look and feel, but my only problem is, what the heck should I do with the old green steel bible which I still have in mint condition?

I purchased the Steel Construction Manual for what at first was a secondary reference for my Structural Steel Design course. This book quickly became the most useful textbook I have used throughout my years of schooling. This manual is truly an encyclopedia for steel design, analysis and construction, and tabulated like one as well. In addition to the hardcover and solid build, the books text is second to none in terms of description and the well laid out equations. The table are clear, precise and very easy to navigate and the accompanying CD-Rom is also very useful. The manual provides data for both Allowable Stress Design and Load Resistance Factor Design. This book is guaranteed to be a top reference for structural engineers of any experience range.

I was required to buy this book for a steel design course, and was annoyed at first with how expensive and bulky this book was, since I assumed we would only be using it for the tables. Once I knew how to use the book, though, I grew quite fond of it. Not only are the tables clearly marked, but the Manual and the commentary in the back were better than our textbook at explaining which equations to use and how to apply them. We now call this book our "Bible" because it has helped and guided us through our steel courses, lol. It was the best money I ever spent on a textbook, and I'm not even considering ever giving the "Bible" up.

This book has everything you need to know to pass a boiler exam. although I wish someone would format this book into sections that fit the study of the exams givin by the state (spec,2nd cl, 1st cl, and chief). This book can be used to obtain all the said licenses but is a pain if your just starting out. It makes no sense to memorize this 300+ page book just to obtain a special class boilers license, but can be very helpful the more advanced the licenses get. And I believe no one will truly know how to maintain a boiler until they do it themselves, books can only take you so far so go get your hands dirty.

This textbook is aimed at newcomers to nonlinear dynamics and chaos, especially students taking a first course in the subject. The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.A unique feature of the book is its emphasis on applications. These include mechanical vibrations, lasers, biological rhythms, superconducting circuits, insect outbreaks, chemical oscillators, genetic control systems, chaotic waterwheels, and even a technique for using chaos to send secret messages. In each case, the scientific background is explained at an elementary level and closely integrated with the mathematical theory.Richly illustrated, and with many exercises and worked examples, this book is ideal for an introductory course at the junior/senior or first-year graduate level. It is also ideal for the scientist who has not had formal instruction in nonlinear dynamics, but who now desires to begin informal study. The prerequisites are multivariable calculus and introductory physics.

Were all Math books written like this, the number of students majoring in Math, Physics, etc. would rise considerably. The presentation is clear, lucid and comprehensive. Each concept is introduced with its motivating phenomena and the mathematical treatment is logical and elegant with many worked examples. This is one of those rare Math books that "begin at the beginning", yet go on to develop the concepts to a point useful even to grad students who want a review of basics before plunging into more advanced material. (If you are looking for more detailed mathematical stuff, I'd suggest Kevorkian's "Multiple Scale and Singular Perturbation Methods" or "Perturbation Methods" by Hinch.)

For the benefit of those reviewers who have complained that the mathematics is not rigorous enough, may I point out that the author clearly states the book is an introduction to the topic. I have come across other introductory books using basic differential equations, on similar topics where the material is presented in a disjointed way. Strogatz, however, shows us the inter-relatedness of the broad range of concepts and applications that fall within the title. Therein lies a major strength of this book.

Another big plus is that Strogatz presents those intermediate diagrams and results that take us to the final conclusion. Also he interprets the Math en route to the finale. He does not employ the usual "it is apparent that ..." strategy to pole-vault to miracle steps. This approach makes the book a breezy read; a remark not commonly made about advanced Math books!

There was once a time when you had to do data acquisition in a lab completely by hand. Hooking up ammeters and voltmeters, and then labouriously taking down measurements into a lab book. If you wanted a graph, well, take out graph paper and some pencils. Things are radically different nowadays, and Labview makes data acquisition relatively easy. I say relatively, because the size of this book is a cautionary note. It is partly a reference manual, so that thankfully, you do not need to read most or all of it to do any useful data collection. But the book also functions as a teaching manual. Explaining in the early parts how to hook up a computer to instruments, often using the GPIB or serial port. Chapter 2 is this basic connection to the lab bench. It is very straightforward. It leads into later chapters, where the idea of block diagram programming in Labview is given. The block diagram approach is a modular one that is like applying a series of filters. Think of matrix algebra, if you have any background in that. Once you realise that a lot of the book's size is due to many choices of built in functions (blocks), then Labview becomes a lot less formidable. Basically, once you can use Labview in some simple way, then applying more sophisticated functions is easy.

I will leave the more in-depth reviews to the readers with more engineering know-how; but I took delivery of this book from Amazon the other day, and as a first-timer to a BMW Bentley manual I'm quite impressed. At over 1400 pages there's no doubting that it's quite comprehensive and detailed. But for anyone who owns an E46 and has gone a step further to become an enthusiast, you will know how complicated these cars are; so it would appear impossible to cover absolutely everything for the E46, what with so many different body variations, engine options and equipment levels, not to mention different markets. Bear in mind that with the international context of use for this book, some details and specifics will be absent.

The pictures included are reasonably well detailed and are of high quality and of a decent size. Explanations are quite clear. A batch of wiring diagrams are appended to the end of the manual, which contributes substantially to its size. As those familiar with Bentley manuals will know, the manual is fully indexed and segmented into the main car components (e.g. engine; body), with each sub-component (e.g. changing the transmission; removing headlights) quite well-defined, including an overview of what special tools are required for the job.

I think this book will come in very handy for my E46 ('99 model) and would recommend it to friends. It's a bit expensive (though in reality this won't bother most people with E46s) and also this version is quite new so it may not breach the second-hand market in any great quantity in the near future.

Supposedly one of the definitive textbooks in digital image processing, this book overlooks quite a few finer details -- graphs labeled improperly, padding not applied in the examples etc., and does not always bridge theory and practise efficiently. A good overview of DIP, but could be confusing to beginners without an introductory background in signal processing.

This book is a wonderful read about image processing. Having read most of the 1st edition (yes I'm reading all of the 3rd), I can say that this 3rd edition is larger (yet not insurmountable) with more examples, explanations, mathematical development and new material. I'm currently in the chapter about frequency domain processing and must say that the previous chapter about spatial domain processing is more robust, even now including a good introduction to fuzzy logic. Anyhow, with a good background in applied math and Matlab programming, this material is easy reading for me, but should also be accessible enough for anyone with a general technical background.

It covers the construction of causal loop diagrams and describes their application in a variety of business and engineering examples.

This is one of the best texts in its field for upper division undergraduate courses and graduate programs. It will be useful to many in business, engineering, and science.

I only wish it included all the current maintenance service bulletins but other than that I have found this service manual to be simply outstanding!!

This book was exactly as described, and arrived way before it was estimated at. I can also recommend this book to other R56 owners, did my first sevice the other weekend and went smoothly due to this handbook. looking forward to saving more money in the future ;)

Architects must be proficient in a variety of business practices to contribute to, manage, or launch a successful firm. One suggestion I have for AIA is to publish an abridged edition and reduce the number of the pages to make it more usable, and focus on the stuff that architects have to deal with everyday or 80% of the time. "The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, 14th Edition" has 1028 pages. Overall, it is a useful resource for architects.

For example, the chapters on fatigue & joints do not provide the education necessary to become a proficient stress analyst in these areas. Any serious stress analyst also has proficiency in an FEA package as well. Roark's formulas serve to provide terrific verification calculations to confirm FEA results are in the ballpark. Overall, there is no reason to be without this iconic textbook.

A useful reference book to have if you are a student or professional. It covers a wide spectrum of subjects. If you focus on one specific subject, then this is not for you. My job requires looking up ASHRAE standards, fluid flow properties and more; this allows me to reference one book, rather than a shelf full. For students, this will have more information than you will probably need as a student, but it is a reference that you will be able to keep and uses in your career. There is also a CD version that is little less expensive. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to have been updated recently. There are two things that I do not like. First is the paper. It is thin, similar to what you find in bibles. Second is the size. The book is bulky, so it is not one that you will carry around.

The best way to prepare for the mechanical PE exam is to solve problems--the more problems the better. Practice Problems for the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam provides you with the breadth-and-depth problem-solving practice you need to successfully prepare for the exam. Build your confidence and improve your problem-solving skills.

This book was a benefit to me, the problems and numerous and force you to apply most of the equations in the MERM. The hydraulics chapter has a disconnect with the MERM, otherwise the problems for the most part were great. They often take much more time than the actual exam problems, but this exercise gets you well prepared, as the exam will narrow in on 3 or 4 steps of problems similar to those found here. IOW, much of what you will have to derive in these problems will be spoonfed to you on the PE mechanical exam.

I recommend working all problems in this book, as well as the author's sample exam book (which also are more difficult than the real test, but not as lengthy as some of these).

I also worked the 6-minute Mechanical Systems and Materials book (recommended) and the NCEES sample exam. That's a lot altogether, but after dealing with all that, the actual exam felt comfortable going by. The PE mechanical exam was fair and at the approximate level of the NCEES sample exam. However, fighting through the problems in this book got me ready, which makes this book very easy to recommend.

I passed my ME PE on my first attempt. In preparation, I completed every problem in this book from Chapters 13-58 as well as a handful of other random problems in this book leading up to my test. I feel that this book was an invaluable preparation tool.

Yes, *some* of the problems in this book take more than 6 minutes to complete. This does not mean the book isn't valuable! The point of this book is NOT to provide simple problems that are solvable in 6 minutes. That is what the various *practice tests* are for. This book provides problems that force you to learn your MERM inside and out backward and forward. The problems presented in this book are often very similar to exam problems - just harder and a little longer. They really force you to learn every step of how to solve a problem.

For example, this book may ask you to do a pumping problem where you are required to lookup scheduled piping dimensions, calculate reynolds #s, friction factors, densities, fitting coefficients (or equivalent lengths) etc. along the way to calculating a total system head loss. On the real test, you might get the exact same type of problem but some of those items are already given to you. Thus, a 10 minute practice problem is turned into a 6 minute test problem. This is why this book is important and why the problems are about the best preparation that is out there for the Mechanical PE exam. You never know which items you will be given and which to find on the test so it's better to understand the whole concept, not JUST the most popular 6 minute versions.

Do not listen to anyone saying these problems take 30 minutes to solve. I would say on average they take anywhere from 3-15 minutes to solve depending on if it is your first time doing the problem and whether you are familiar with the topic at all.

I will say that this book is a little light on HVAC problems; however, pick up the 6 Minute Solutions HVAC book as well as work your other HVAC-depth practice problems and you will be good to go if you are HVAC like I was.

This book provides very good simulation exams for the General FE test. Although you will not expect the same problems may appear by any chance in your real FE exam, it really helps to do these simulations before you go to the test. The problems help you to review all the knowledge you need to know (at least where you can find it in the standard reference book) for the test. If you mean to pass the exam at the first time, you need to do this.

This book was not bad. It is quite large to carry around, but that's not really such a big issue. It is meant to prepare you for the "other disciplines" afternoon test and the general morning exam. If you are using this book to just study for the morning section, remember to ignore certain concepts. Print out the topic breakdown from the NCEES website and use that to decide which topics to skip. For instance, Biology is not on the morning section.

Some sections present problems that are a bit harder than what you will see on the morning section of the exam. Again, the main issue with this book is it does not separate the review for morning and afternoon sections, so in order to just cover the simpler material for the morning exam, one might have to make decisions about what material is unnecessary to study. It is possible to make that sort of judgment call, but this is not really the job of the studier to take care of this. It should be broken down by the author for the reader's convenience. I believe if you use this book, and you go through every section, do the practice problems and sample exams, and go back and do the diagnostics at the beginning of each section afterward, you will be prepared to do well on the morning section. Again, the book is decent and is pretty much all that I found was available for the FE exam. There is a limited selection of review material.

One suggestion I have for AIA is to publish an abridged edition and reduce the number of the pages to make it more usable, and focus on the stuff that architecture students have to deal with everyday or 80% of the time. Structural Steel Design 5th Edition, Jack C. McCormac



The material is presented in a clear, reader-friendly style. This best-selling text has been fully updated to conform to the latest American Manual of Steel Construction. Both Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) are now covered and calculations are worked out side-by-side to allow for easy identification of the different methods. Use of SI units as an addition to the primary use of Inch-Pound units. New coverage of Lateral Torsional Bending and Hollow Structural Sections. For steel design students and professionals.

Generally, I find the author to be a descent author, but I found his book on structural steel design to simply ramble on with plenty of examples but no overview of where he is coming from. Therefore, I found it difficult to learn from the book. I read it up to chapter 14 and realized I couldn't solve a single problem. That's after passing a structural steel design corse in civil engineering. This book is no substitue for a good course taught by a good professor. If you have neither, this book will not fill the gap unfortunately. His book on reinforced concrete is much much better. In his steel book there is more structural analysis than steel design. I think author Jack Mccormac can do a better job of it.
