Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain 8th Edition, Warren Young

THE MOST COMPLETE, UP-TO-DATE GUIDE TO STRESS AND STRAIN FORMULAS

Fully revised throughout, Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, Eighth Edition, provides accurate and thorough tabulated formulations that can be applied to the stress analysis of a comprehensive range of structural components. All equations and diagrams of structural properties are presented in an easy-to-use, thumb, through format.

This extensively updated edition contains new chapters on fatigue and fracture mechanics, stresses in fasteners and joints, composite materials, and biomechanics. Several chapters have been expanded and new topics have been added. Each chapter now concludes with a summary of tables and formulas for ease of reference. This is the definitive resource for designers, engineers, and analysts who need to calculate stress and strain management.

A must-have reference book for mechanical engineers involved in design, analysis, testing, failure analysis, or mentoring. The new chapters on fatigue and fracture mechanics, bolted joints, composite materials, and bio-mechanics make this classic even more comprehensive and valuable to practicing engineers.

As the all-around handy concise reference to stress analysis, Roark's remains King. The differences in the table of contents are listed below. The price is also quite reasonable for a 1072 pg book. Roark's strength remains in the extensive tables of many common and uncommon loading conditions and restraints. The chapters provide brief overviews of the theoretical concepts behind the tables but cannot be regarded as a teaching medium for these deep topics. For example, the chapters on fatigue & joints do not provide the education necessary to become a proficient stress analyst in these areas. Any serious stress analyst also has proficiency in an FEA package as well. Roark's formulas serve to provide terrific verification calculations to confirm FEA results are in the ballpark. Overall, there is no reason to be without this iconic textbook.

Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual 13th Edition, Michael R. Lindeburg PE

Working through the practice problems in this book and then consulting the detailed solutions will help you understand not only what the correct answer is, but why it is correct and the most efficient way to arrive at the answer.

Overall it is good PE exam review material, but there is a surprising amount of typos and errors in the solutions for this type of book. Nevertheless, I recommend it

Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam contains 755 problems designed to help you identify important civil engineering topics and apply your knowledge to a variety of problems. Short, six-minute, multiple-choice problems demonstrate the format of the NCEES Civil PE exam and help you concentrate on a single subject. More complex problems combine several concepts, illustrate efficient and accurate solving methods, and familiarize you with the codes, standards, and references you’ll need for the exam.

Solutions are clear, complete, and easy to follow. U.S. customary and SI units are equally supported, and units are meticulously identified and rigorously carried through all calculations. Where multiple methodologies (e.g., ASD and LRFD) are permitted by the exam, both solutions are presented in this book. Frequent references back to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual and the original codes and standards direct you to support material when you need it.

Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE 7-10 1st Edition, American Society of Civil Engineers

Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures provides requirements for general structural design and includes means for determining dead, live, soil, flood, wind, snow, rain, atmospheric ice, and earthquake loads, as well as their combinations, which are suitable for inclusion in building codes and other documents. This Standard, a revision of ASCE/SEI 7-05, offers a complete update and reorganization of the wind load provisions, expanding them from one chapter into six. The Standard contains new ultimate event wind maps with corresponding reductions in load factors, so that the loads are not affected, and updates the seismic loads with new risk-targeted seismic maps. The snow, live, and atmospheric icing provisions are updated as well. In addition, the Standard includes a detailed Commentary with explanatory and supplementary information designed to assist building code committees and regulatory authorities.

Standard ASCE/SEI 7 is an integral part of building codes in the United States. Many of the load provisions are substantially adopted by reference in the International Building Code and the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code.

Structural engineers, architects, and those engaged in preparing and administering local building codes will find this Standard an essential reference in their practice.

Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE/SEI 7-10, is a complete revision of ASCE Standard 7-05. ASCE 7-10 offers a complete update and reorganization of the wind load provisions, expanding them from one chapter into six to make them more understandable and easier to follow. ASCE 7-10 provides new ultimate event wind maps with corresponding reductions in load factors, so that the loads are not affected. It updates the seismic loads of ASCE 7-05, offering new risk-targeted seismic maps. The snow load, live load, and atmospheric icing provisions of ASCE 7-05 are all updated as well.

Civil Discipline-Specific Review for the FE/EIT Exam 3rd Edition, Robert Kim MSCE PE

The Civil Discipline-Specific Review is designed to give you the best preparation for the civil section of the FE exam. 61 practice problems plus two 4-hour afternoon practice exams supplement your study regime and help you assess your readiness for the exam. If you are taking the civil section of the FE exam, Civil Discipline-Specific Review will give you the focused practice and preparation you need to pass.

This book is simply a set of problems and solutions of Civil Engineering problems that are similar to the FE. The problems in the book are on the level of the actual FE examination (unlike the general FE exam book) so you can see what to expect by using this book.

One major downside to this book is that it contains no formula sections like the main Lindeburg manual, so if you have forgotten these formulas then you probably either want to take the general afternoon exam or review from textbooks before using this book. It appears to me that this book was made more for people who are still in school or fresh out of school.

Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam 12th Edition, Michael R Lindeburg

Over the many editions of the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual, the author has fine-tuned the coverage of exam topics, the presentation of problems, and all other aspects of the book, making it the essential resource for the mechanical PE exam.

As the most comprehensive reference and study guide available for engineers preparing for the breadth-and-depth mechanical PE examination, the twelfth edition of the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual provides a concentrated review of the exam topics.

Thousands of important equations and methods are shown and explained throughout the Reference Manual, plus hundreds of examples with detailed solutions demonstrate how to use these equations to correctly solve problems on the mechanical PE exam. Dozens of key charts, tables, and graphs, including updated steam tables and two new charts of LMTD heat exchanger correction factors, make it possible to work most exam problems using the Reference Manual alone. A complete, easy-to-use index saves you valuable time during the exam as it helps you quickly locate important information needed to solve problems.

The first page of this manual is conversion factors. I'd recommend adding to this list as you are studying because it is not all-inclusive and many of the exam questions try to trip you up by giving you information in 'strange' units. For instance, they'll give you power in kW and expect an answer in ft/min or they'll give pressure in inches of water and you'll need to convert it to atmospheres. The second page is physical constants like air density and the universal gas constant, R. Add to this list as you study along because the exam will expect you to know the other 'constants' such as the density of steel, aluminum, and concrete.

About two weeks before the exam I recommend taking Lindeburg's practice exam Mechanical PE Sample Examination and the NCEES sample exam (available from NCEES). Treat them as if you're actually in the exam room. Start the exam at 8am and stop working at 12pm; no breaks or interuptions. This will give you a taste of the real exam and how important it is to be able to find your material quickly. Don't be tempted to look at the problems beforehand because you won't have that advantage during the real exam. Study the solutions afterwards and think about why and how you messed up.

Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam 13th Edition, Michael R. Lindeburg PE

The Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam 13th Edition is the referenc
e most engineers choose to prepare for and use during the civil PE exam. Comprehensive beyond any other exam-focused publication, CERM provides the topical review, the data tables, and other resources necessary to pass this exam.

CERM is organized in general topic areas, corresponding to the knowledge areas tested on the exam. Within these areas, 87 chapters break the topics down into manageable units. Each chapter provides a concise review of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the topic. Throughout the text, solved example problems demonstrate how to apply what's being discussed.

The 9th Edition references the same structural and transportation codes (UBC, ACI, NDS, AASHTO, HCM, etc.) that are used on the current PE exam. You don't have to worry about using one edition of the code as you study, only to find another used on the exam.

With the Reference Manual and its accompanying products, you can be confident you're using the best preparation materials available for this PE exam. CERM won't take the work out of the preparation process, but it will make your study time as productive as possible. The manual's breadth of coverage, combined with its excellent index and glossary, make it a valuable, time-saving reference--before, during, and after the exam.

Steel Design 5th Edition, William T. Segui

Steel Design covers the fundamentals of structural steel design with an emphasis on the design of members and their connections, rather than the integrated design of buildings. Not only is Steel Design a revision of LRFD Steel Design, it also encompasses the 2005 unification of LRFD and ASD as is covered in the Steel Construction Manual. The book is designed so that instructors can easily teach either LRFD or ASD, or both, time-permitting, as the differences in the two approaches are mostly conceptual. The application of fundamental principles is encouraged for design procedures as well as for practical design, but so is a theoretical approach, enhancing the students development. While the book is intended for junior-and senior-level engineering students, some of the later chapters can be used in graduate courses. Due to the changes that were made to many provisions of the Steel Construction Manual, practicing engineers will find this text useful in reviewing current practices and it will be an essential reference tool.

This textbook is great- the content is organized in a manner that makes sense, from theory to application. Very concise and to the point, while explaining content thoroughly. All the material in the book was essential to pass and very detailed
